Limited edition blend of Rare Breed Wensleydale and Merino in a beautiful 4-ply yarn. Produced in Cornwall by The Raw Wool Company.

This Merino/Wensleydale 4-ply yarn from The Raw Wool Company is a really special limited edition. It’s woollen spun and contains 70% British merino lambswool and 30% British Wensleydale lambswool.

This yarn has all the voluminous softness of merino with the added lustre and strength of Wensleydale. It feels incredibly soft and springy, and is an absolute delight to knit with! The light grey shade has a very slight sheen to it and the darker Wensleydale fibres give it extra depth. It would be perfect for next-to-skin accessories such as scarves, cowls and gloves.

About The Raw Wool Company

In 2010 Juli Hewins and Anton set out rearing and raising a flock of Rare Breed Wensleydale sheep on the Cornish coast. Their mission has always been “No fuss, nothing unnecessary and keep it as natural as possible”. The wool from their flock is sorted by hand at the farm into three beautiful shades, and then spun at a local mill in Cornwall. The Raw Wool Company has created a yarn that is untouched by chemical dyes and is a true celebration of all natural British rare breed wool.

In recent years, Anton has been working with other local young farmers to improve their fleeces, both to stop them going to waste and to widen the Raw Wool Company’s colour palette to include the whole range of colours from black to white. Alongside local farmer Steve from Porthleven, he has recently added creamy white Dorset and a stark white Lleyn to his range of undyed British yarns.

Why We Love Them:

We love the work that Anton is doing to champion rare breed sheep and naturally coloured yarn. His conviction to avoid both chemicals and plastic packaging is something that we really admire, and the natural colours of his Wensleydale yarn are absolutely gorgeous.

Pattern Inspiration:

Cloudburst Mitts by Arienne Grey

The Cloudburst Mitts pattern by Arienne Grey (external link) is a free Ravelry download. These beautiful fingerless mittens feature a repeating lace motif that is easy to memorise whilst still being interesting to knit. The pattern is for one size, (women’s medium), but the length could be adjusted as needed. We used just under half a skein of Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining to make our pair.
