UK Produced
The UK has a long history of sheep farming and wool production, and British wool is known to be of a really high quality. Today, Britain is home to more than 60 breeds of sheep, including 25 rare breeds. There are 450 000 sheep farmers in the UK, producing nearly 70 000 tonnes of wool each year. Unfortunately the value of British wool has been steadily declining since the 1950s meaning that in many cases this amazing natural and sustainable material simply goes to waste. Currently around 60% of the wool produced in the UK is sold to China
There are many reasons to choose to buy wool that has been produced in the UK. Animal welfare is strictly controlled, as are chemical processes such as the dyeing and scouring of wool. Wool is already an incredibly sustainable product, and its environmental impact is even smaller if it hasn’t been flown around the world for processing. It’s also vitally important that we continue to support the amazing network of UK farmers, producers and fibre mills that make up the UK wool industry. We’re really pleased that there has been a renewed interest in British wool by knitters and handcrafters in recent years and we love finding UK producers and yarn companies whose products we can add to our shelves.
